I formed Pilgrim 1 in October 2023 as a solution to fill a main support slot for Milhouse, who were headlining The Peer Hat in Manchester 2 months later. After moving to Liverpool and getting to know the network of musicians around me, I contacted Linus Westwood and Rob Nesbit to form the band. Our initial sessions focused on writing, giving us a foundation of collaborative songwriting that has stayed a large part of the band since. In our first session, we sat down and wrote 'The Ballad of Saint Bertin' and 'All I Really Wanted' which would become fundamental to our early live shows - the latter still a staple of our setlist today. We would write 'Electric' and 'Don't Know Why' during rehearsals in the following weeks. Myself and Linus sat down to write 2 more songs over an evening in November and wrote 'The Songs He Wrote' and 'My Old Friend'. We then found inspiration for our name on Liverpool's Pilgrim St with 'The Pilgrim' pub, a place where we would often find ourselves at that point.
Over the course of our first 7 months as a band, we sold out a co-headline gig at Liverpool's Kazimier Stockroom with Milhouse (after previously playing Manchester as their main support), sold out Manchester's The Peer Hat where we had played our first support slot, and headlined the iconic Jacaranda Club in Liverpool the week after that. We have also been on various line-ups events for gigs across Liverpool consistently since we first played live in December 2023.
Musically, I have found myself in many roles in this band, primarily drummer, but also regularly backing vocals, and sometimes piano & keyboards for more stripped back performances - even stretching to additional arrangements and more. I took care of most of the management tasks, including advancing, booking & scheduling gigs, running social media and creative direction. I also promoted our headline gigs in 2024.
Our first live shows were in December 2023, with a warm-up gig at Arts Bar Baltic in Liverpool, and supporting Milhouse at The Peer Hat, Manchester.
Set times were limited, but we alternated 6 songs and made a large impression.
We also played a surprise set at LIPA's Sennheiser Studio Sessions.
In the new year of 2024, we pushed towards our co-headline at Liverpool's Kazimier stockroom, which we would sell out in advance.
We played various shows around this, including the 'Week of Fun' - a group of shows scheduled as close together as we could.
We also debuted new material at these shows.
Having sold out the Kazimier Stockroom in our hometown Liverpool, and played in my own hometown Manchester on one of our early shows, in May 2024 we would embark on back-to-back headline shows in both cities.
We would go on to sell out in Manchester, playing one of our most successful gigs to date to a packed crowd.
In Spring of 2024, we were keen to record our first single after months of demo sessions. After many discussions and suggestions, we chose to work with Sam Durkin, a close friend and world-class studio engineer who would record the song and co-produce with us.
Sessions took place in May, and the song was recorded completely before the end of the month. Sam Durkin would mix and master the song over the following months.
Pilgrim 1 are fast becoming one of Liverpool’s hottest and most exciting new bands, comprising of Robbie Nesbit (vocals and guitar), Aaron Jones (drums and vocals), and Linus Westwood (bass). Inspired by an eclectic mix of classic British guitar bands such as those on NME’s C86 cassette and those that dominated the charts throughout the Britpop movement, Pilgrim 1 take their name from their local pub ‘The Pilgrim’ in Liverpool’s Georgian Quarter. The band are making waves in the grassroots scene in the North of England playing venues iconic venues across the country from Liverpool's Baltic Quarter to Manchester's Northern Quarter, and most recently playing a pair of headline dates in Manchester and Liverpool. Pilgrim 1 have big things to come in 2025.
